All pets must be kept in cool, shady areas. It is ideal to bring them inside on particularly hot days.
Always make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water in at least two places. If the water bowls are outside, ensure they are placed in somewhere shady. Place some ice blocks in the water to ensure the water stays cooler for longer.
Place a shallow wading pool in the shade. Fill it with enough water for your dog to cool its feet.
Invest in a cooling bandana. After soaking the bandana in water for 15-30 minutes, your dog can then wear the bandana and feel the cooling effects for several hours. Check out your local pet store or buy online.
Create cool treats for your dog. Freeze your pooches favourite treats in an iceblock. This will keep them occupied & cool at the same time!
Limit exercise. Try to walk your dog in the morning or evening when the weather is cooler. Stick to shady areas. Carry cool, fresh water on you at all times. Be careful of the ground being hot to walk on. Don’t overdo it!
Do not leave dogs (or any other animals) in a parked car, even on a mild day. Within minutes, the temperature inside a car can be double what it is outside. It can take only 6 minutes for a dog in a car to suffer heat stroke. If you see a dog left inside a parked car immediately dial Police Emergency 000. If you think the dog needs immediate attention, find a witness who will support the decision to take the necessary action to get the dog out of the car.
Stay cool Melbourne!
